Environmental Imapct Statement (EIS) Available for Download

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) and the Smithsonian Institution have filed the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the South Mall Campus Master Plan with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The publication of the notice of availability by the EPA in the Federal Register begins a 30-day public waiting period before a Record of Decision can be signed by the National Capital Planning Commission. The 30-day public waiting period for the Final EIS begins on April 20, 2018 and will end on May 21, 2018. Any questions or comments are due no later than May 21, 2018. Questions or comments can be submitted to: commentsonsouthcampus@si.edu or to NCPC at matthew.flis@ncpc.gov.

The release of the final EIS is in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and is a necessary step in the decision-making process on the Master Plan for the South Mall Campus. The Final EIS objectively reviews the impacts and benefits of three action alternatives and the No-Action Alternative. NCPC and the Smithsonian Institution have determined that Alternative F would best meet the purpose and need for a Master Plan for the South Mall Campus.
